High Levels of Learning for All Students

April 14, 2014

Letter from the Superintendent

I wanted to share with you the decision process that was used regarding not cancelling school on April 14th. Monday morning, we lost power at Edgemont, Owen and Savage Schools.  Power was restored at all three buildings by 7:00 am.  At approximately 7:30 am, I was notified that power had again gone out at all three buildings.  Cancelling school at that point would have left a number of students standing at a bus stop, walking on roads, or left at home unattended, as many parents assumed school was proceeding as normal and had left their homes for work, etc.

Additionally, the notification process for school cancellation takes time.  EduLink only reaches about 60 – 65% of our parents, and cancelling school with the news media as buses are beginning to pick students up would be too late.

As Superintendent, my first responsibility is to the safety of all of our students.  Five, six and seven year olds, left at a bus stop or alone at home is not what is best for any child.  While the situation was far from desirable, the safest thing for all of our students at that late time was to proceed with the scheduled routes and deal with the situation moving forward as best we could.  I know in my heart that the decision I made is what was best for all students and their safety.

I want to thank everyone involved for today’s selfless dedication to the students we serve; and express our appreciation to the parents and guardians for their understanding as we worked through this challenge.

New Instruments For Music

A big THANK YOU to all who contributed to our music fundraiser or donated new instruments to the music classroom! We have received 4 steel drums, 1 drum, 4 sets of boom sticks, and 5 Orff instruments (xylophone styled instruments). We still have funds available and we are looking to purchase more wonderful things for the classroom!

Student Council Rocks!

Student Council sponsored a pet supply drive for needy animals in local rescues. Mrs. Hickson agreed to chop off an entire foot-length of her long locks if the kids collected 10,000 points worth of pet supplies. Each item was assigned a point value. We far surpassed our goal so Mrs. Hickson got a hair cut at the town hall meeting on Wednesday, March 5th.
Olympics!

Students at Savage Elementary are participating in a mini-Olympic Games this week. The games kicked off with an opening ceremony which included a parade of flags.  The games take place throughout the week and encourage the players to use measurement and estimation skills. So far, their favorites are the "Left Handed Sponge Squeeze" and the "Cotton Ball Shot Put."  Best of all, the students are connecting academic learning to a real-world, global event.  Citius, Altius, Fortius!
